Alena Olsen played volleyball and soccer in high school, quickly transferring her athletic skills to rugby where she earned Collegiate All-American honors in 2015 and 2016. She attended a rugby practice in college and was instantly drawn to the sport, noting that rugby players are some of her "favorite kind of people".

In 2016 she was named to the Collegiate Rugby Championship Dream Team and in 2017 she was chosen as Big 10 Back of the Year. The string of impressive performances gave her a spot on three consecutive Women's Falcons tours including a 2017 exhibition series against Australia, Super Sevens Brisbane and Okinawa Sevens Invitational in 2018.

Her dedication to the sport reaped more rewards when Olsen helped the San Diego Surfers claim a championship victory at the 2018 Club Sevens National Championships. From there, she earned her first senior team selection for the USA Women's Sevens 2018 in Glendale.
