Sarah Buonopane began playing rugby in 2011 at Stonehill College where she quickly fell in love with the sport and used her athletic ability to emerge as a standout player. During her senior year in 2015, after she led her team to a Rugby Northeast 7s Championship Title, Buonopane was easily regarded by her coach as the “MVP” of the game. That same year, she was recognized as the Women’s Rugby Northeast Player of the Year and earned Collegiate All-American Honors, as well.

Following her impressive collegiate career, Buonopane played for the Northeast Academy and Beantown Rugby Football Club before she transferred to Old Blue New York’s Women’s 7s squad. In 2016, she was granted an official invitation to the USA Rugby Women’s National Team Camp; an honor she was afforded again for the following two consecutive camps.

In 2017, during the HSBC World Sevens Series stop in Sydney, Buonopane became the first player to earn a national cap by way of coming up solely through the academy pathway. Continuing her growth as an Eagle, Buonopane suited up for the 2017 Dubai Sevens Tournament where she helped the Women’s Eagles Sevens soar to a second-place finish and the biggest upset of the weekend against New Zealand.
