Ohio claims victory, Denver takes first PRO title

Ohio won the match, but Denver celebrated a championship title. That was the scene in Obetz, Ohio, when PRO Rugby’s historic first season ended with an Aviators' 32-25 win, but the Stampede’s ability to stay within seven points of Ohio granted Denver a bonus point – keeping the boys from Colorado one standings point ahead of the Aviators, and crowning the Stampede as Champion.

Standings

Denver Stampede

PRO Rugby Denver is a charter member of the North American professional rugby league and in a region that has profited from more than half a century of rugby action, producing national champions and excellence in every age grade and category. Led by head coach Sean O’Leary, forwards coach Peter Borlase and conditioning coach David Williams, the team is primed for a great inaugural season.


  • Sean O'Leary
    Head Coach: Sean O’Leary

    A native of Ireland, O’Leary has led programs at Boston College High School, Northeastern University, New England Select Sides before reestablishing the University of Notre Dame as a force in collegiate rugby. Sean’s widespread involvement in American rugby has also included spells with both USA Rugby Under-17 and Under-19 programs.


  • Dave Williams
    Assistant Coach: Dave Williams

    David, a native of England, represented the USA Eagles in both 7s and 15s, with 2 and 12 caps respectively. He has worked with the USA Men’s National Team and multiple USA age-grade teams, overseeing all aspects of strength and conditioning. He is also an acknowledged 7s and skills coach, most recently working with the Pacific Rugby Premiership Champion Glendale Raptors.


  • Pete Borlase
    Assistant Coach: Sean O’Leary

    Borlase, a native of New Zealand, enjoyed an impressive career playing for the Crusaders, Munster, Connacht, and Hawkes Bay. Upon retirement, Borlase began coaching Gernika Rugby in Spain. Pete then moved to Denver, where he has been the Head Coach for the past two seasons of the Denver Barbarians, who compete in the Pacific Rugby Premiership. He has also served as an Assistant Coach for the USA U-20s for the past three seasons.

Ohio Aviators

PRO Rugby Ohio is stationed in the city of Obetz, just around the corner from the state capital of Columbus. Led by Paul Barford, this is truly a homegrown team, with players hailing from cities like Hudson, Toledo, Westerville and Akron. That strong local backbone along with considerable talent from across the country and overseas means Ohio is set to make waves out west this season.

    Head Coach: Paul Barford

    Barford is a native of England where he played for the storied Leicester Tigers. Not only is he a certified World Rugby educator, he holds the highest World Rugby Level 3 certification. For the past 35 years, Barford has dedicated himself to USA Rugby and has been a key figure in the development of many Eagles from his work with U17, U18, U19, and U20 programs. He has also coached with the USA Men’s A side, the South, and Life University.


  • Paul Holmes
    Assistant Coach: Paul Holmes

    Founding partner of Tiger Rugby, Paul has been instrumental in establishing the Tiger Rugby High Performance Academy in Columbus, Ohio. In addition to starting and coaching his local club side 1823, Paul is a noted Sevens coach with significant international experience with Tiger Rugby, and has been directly responsible for the development of elite American players that have placed on USA national teams. Paul is a certified IRB 400 level coach and a qualified Strength and Conditioning Coach.

    Paul studied in South Africa and England and has a Degree in Sports Physiology. He played his rugby in South Africa, England and UAE and has been directly involved in rugby development and coaching in South Africa, England, the Middle East, UAE and USA, most recently with USA Rugby 7’s program.


  • Eamonn Hogan
    Assistant Coach: Eamonn Hogan

    Born in Wales, and raised in Ireland before spending time in the Royal Air Force, Hogan comes to PRO Rugby Ohio after ten years as a guest coach and advisor to some of America’s finest rugby institutions. From grassroots programs, to elite college and national championship winning club sides, Eamonn has used over twenty years of coaching experiences obtained from travelling all over the world to the benefit of American rugby.

    Hogan spent five years working within the world famous Leicester Tigers Junior Academy program where he helped fashion the elite youth program still in use at the club today. Eamonn is a writer for the world-renowned Rugby Coach Weekly and is the author of four best selling instructional rugby books helping coaches at all levels of the game.

Sacramento Express

It’s the capital of California, but Sacramento is also home to some of the best rugby in the country. Luke Gross leads a strong and determined group of professional athletes coming from around the globe to accomplish one goal, win PRO Rugby Championships. Watch out for Sacramento this inaugural season.

  • Luke Gross
    Head Coach: Luke Gross

    Gross represented the USA Eagles 62 times and in 3 World Cups. In the UK, he played professionally for the Harlequins, Llanelli and the Newcastle Falcons. Since 2009, Gross has performed a variety of coaching roles for USA Rugby in both the High Performance and Coach Development fields. He is also acknowledged as one of the foremost authorities in forward play in American rugby.


  • Kevin Battle
    Assistant Coach: Kevin Battle

    Over the past 16 years, Battle has committed himself to growing rugby at every level. He has served as Coach of the USA Falcons and Hawks, the Southern California Junior and Senior Griffins, Assistant Coach for USA Men’s U-20 National Team, and Head Coach and Director of Rugby at the University of California-Santa Barbara. He has also held a variety of managerial and administrative roles within the rugby community and is currently the Commissioner of 40 D1-A College Rugby teams.


  • Fred Waititi
    Assistant Coach: Fred Waititi

    A native of New Zealand, where he played Provincial rugby for Northland, Fred led the Gentlemen of Aspen to national titles in both 15’s and 7’s. Waititi has also coached extensively on three different continents and is a widely respected skills coach.

San Diego Breakers

PRO Rugby San Diego is a charter member of the North American professional rugby league. Led by head coach Ray Egan, this diverse group of athletes comes with immense depth and experience. The roster includes Hubert Buydens and Phil Mackenzie who have a combined 74 caps for Canada. With this level of leadership, San Diego is set to bring a lot of exciting and creative play to the 2016 season.

    Head Coach: Ray Egan

    Ray Egan is a native of Ireland and a graduate of Loughborough University. Egan has an extensive coaching background with both Munster and Ireland age grade teams. As an Elite Player Development Coach for Munster, he worked with several current Irish National team players. He has most recently served as Head Coach for PRP side Belmont Shore as well as Director of Coaching for the Southern California Griffins. In addition, he is a Regional Academy Director for Tiger Rugby.


  • Rob Hoadley
    Assistant Coach: Rob Hoadley

    Hoadley was born in London and had an extensive playing career at center with both London Irish and Wasps, where he later became defense coach under the famous defensive guru Shaun Edwards. Hoadley has most recently coached at Stanford University, and is the current backs coach for the USA Men’s Eagles.


  • Matt Hawkins
    Assistant Coach: Matt Hawkins

    Matt’s rugby career in the US started with playing stints for OMBAC and the SoCal Griffins before representing the USA at both 15s and 7s, where he was an exceptional player and captain for several years. He has been Head Coach for both the USA 7s Men’s National team and San Diego State University. Hawkins has also been a member of the USA Rugby Board and most recently has dedicated considerable time to youth and high school programs in the San Diego area.

San Francisco Rush

San Francisco has been at the peak of North American rugby for over a century. Head coach Paul Keeler leads its first professional team, featuring some of the best local talent mixed with Super Rugby veteran Orene Aii, US Eagle and Bay Area native David Tameilau. Mils Muliaina, one of the most successful All Blacks in history, joins the team midway through the season, ensuring an exhilarating start and finish to their inaugural season.

    Head Coach: Paul Keeler

    Keeler, a World Rugby Level 3 coach, is one of the United States most successful and respected coaches, having led national powerhouse clubs San Francisco Golden Gate and Old Blue, as well as steering the USA “A” and other representative sides. He is very familiar with all levels of the game in Northern California, most recently as Head Coach of the University of Santa Clara.


  • Simon Fathers
    Assistant Coach: Simon Fathers

    Fathers, a native of New Zealand, has worked within High Performance Strength & Conditioning environments with a number of internationally acclaimed rugby teams. Having worked with San Francisco Golden Gate, he moved on to take a role with Argentina’s National Team during the 2011 World Cup and entry into the 2012 Super Rugby competition.


  • Adriaan Ferris
    Assistant Coach: Adriaan Ferris

    Ferris is a native of New Zealand, who graduated from Massey University before embarking on a highly successful coaching career, which has included Northland, Tonga, and a four-year spell as New Zealand U-20 Selector where he worked with future All Blacks. His current role is Athletic Director at Life West.
